Joint Committee on Improving Men's Health and Wellbeing
A joint parliamentary committee bringing together members of both houses will examine how to improve men’s health and wellbeing in South Australia. Its establishment is an important step towards addressing persistent challenges, particularly suicide and poor mental health, that affect men and families across our community.
Drawing on evidence from men, families and people with lived experience, the committee will explore changes in men’s health over time, differences between population groups, and barriers that prevent or discourage men from seeking support, including distrust of health services. It will also examine the rise of toxic masculinity and how digital platforms and algorithms can accelerate boys’ and men’s exposure to harmful content, affecting their health, wellbeing and relationships.
The inquiry will assess government policies and initiatives, consider the role of community, sporting and social groups, and identify ways to support families and foster positive masculinity. By turning growing awareness into practical recommendations for governments and community organisations, the committee aims to strengthen support, encourage earlier intervention and deliver lasting improvements that help prevent further loss of life.
The Committee will soon be seeking written submission from individuals and organisations. You can contact my office if you would like to be kept updated.
